Niger Coup Leader: "We'll Turn Over To A Civilian Government Within Three Years"

Image
General Abdourahamane Tchiani, leader of the Niger junta, has said the army will hand over power to the civilian government within the next three years. He stated this in a televised broadcast on Saturday night. Tchiani made his remarks following a meeting with a team from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which was headed by General Abdulsalami Abubakar, the former head of state (rtd). According to General Tchiani, the junta would appoint a committee within a month to draft the nation's new constitution. The General underlined that Niger will defend itself if necessary, even though the country does not wish to go to war. But he also said that there was still room for dialogue. This is coming on the heels of ECOWAS force readiness to intervene in Niger ‘anytime the order is given’, after a two-day meeting of the regional bloc’s military chiefs in Accra, capital city of Ghana.

Foreign Exchange Market Naira Floats Are Illegal - Femi Falana Speaks

Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has declared that the Central Bank of Nigeria's move of floating the Naira in the foreign exchange market is illegal. Falana revealed this in a television interview on Friday. He said that the country's economy is in turmoil as a result of its dollarization. Domestic transactions including rent, school fees, and others are being done in dollars, putting pressure on the Naira, according to the human rights lawyer. We won't move forward as long as the government is unwilling to strengthen the Naira and make it the only legal tender in Nigeria. Because Section 16 of the Central Bank Act gives the bank the authority to fix and decide the Naira's rate in relation to other currencies, there is no provision for the Naira to float, so I sued the Central Bank of Nigeria in the Federal High Court for this reason. According to Femi Falana, "The only legal tender in Nigeria shall be the currency issued by the Central Ban...

At the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting for the month on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, which was chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, this information was made public. Babagana Zulum, the governor of Borno, said it was a component of a strategy to deal with the high cost of life brought on by the end of subsidies. In addition to other goods, he claimed that the states will buy 100,000 bags of rice and beans and five trucks worth of rice for each state. He also revealed that the NEC had decided that because of the influx of refugees from the unstable neighboring country, the border states abutting the Niger Republic would receive more palliative supplies than other states.
