The Federal Government declined on Thursday to speak on the health status of President Muhammadu Buhari’s Chief of Staff (CoS), Abba Kyari. Two ministers – Osagie Ehanire (Health) and Lai Mohammed (Information and Culture) – declined when asked by reporters. They said the health status is personal to every individual. At separate news conferences in Abuja yesterday, they gave the list of ministers and top Presidency officials, including Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), who tested negative to the virus. The government of Adamawa State has said that it will not pay March salaries to its workers, IgbereTV reports. According to a statement released from the office of the governor of Adamawa State, the non-payment of March salary is as a result of the economic hardship caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Nigeria has recorded 14 new cases of the coronavirus, bringing the total number from 51 to 65. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced this via its Twitter handle on Thursday night. It said 12 of the cases are in Lagos while two are in Abuja. The centre said six of the new cases were “detected on a vessel”, while three are returning travellers and two, a close contact of a confirmed case. The latest data shows Lagos still has the highest number of cases, 44, while Abuja and Ogun have 11 and three cases respectively. Ekiti, Oyo, Edo, Osun and Rivers all have one coronavirus patient each, while Bauchi has two. Nigeria’s only casualty from the disease is Suleiman Achimugu, former managing director of the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC), who died on Monday. The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has called for caution in the use of hand sanitisers amid the coronavirus outbreak. The FFS said sanitisers could cause fire incidents. Abdulganiyu Jaji, Head of the Inspectorate, Investigation and Enforcement Department, spoke at a low-key event to mark the 2020 National Fire Safety Week. Jaji represented the Controller-General, Mr Liman Ibrahim. He said the warning had become necessary as most hand sanitisers are highly inflammable and could easily start fires if not properly handled, especially by children. “The sanitiser we use contains chemicals which when exposed to fire can lead to fire outbreak. “That is why we have to be conscious of it. Most times, we see people putting the sanitiser outside the home-by the entrance. “This is to prevent the alcohol vapour from spreading inside the house,” he said. Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president, has donated N50 million as relief fund to support the fight against coronavirus. Atiku made the announcement in a statement personally signed by him on Wednesday. According to Atiku, the donation will be made by Priam Group on his behalf as part of the stimulus package the federal government should create for Nigerians. He Said: “I commend all individuals and corporate organisations who have one way or the other provided some form of relief for the Nigerian people. I further call on more corporations and individuals with capacity, to assist the public in these trying times. “To this end, Priam Group pledges N50 million on my behalf as my humble contribution to a relief Fund that will form part of the stimulus package.”

Ecobank Nigeria Limited has closed its Wuse II branch in Abuja on Monday after a customer who visited the bank died after contracting coronavirus. The bank said the victim, Mr. Sulaiman Achimugu, a former Managing Director of the Pipelines and Product Marketing Company, visited the branch twelve days before his death. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has technically devalued the naira exchange rate on the Investors and Exporters’ (I&E) window from the N366.7 to a dollar it closed on Thursday, to N380.20 to a dollar. A source at the CBN confirmed this to THISDAY on Friday. Trading data from Bloomberg terminal showed that there was very low appetite for the CBN open market operations (OMO) instruments offered Thursday, suggesting that foreign portfolio investors have since adopted a wait-and-see approach to the raging COVID-19 pandemic. “Dear all, kindly be informed that the CBN has moved the rate of FX sales to FPIs from N366.70 to N380.20/$. We will advise as developments unfold,” traders were advised on the Bloomberg terminal.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has appealed to Lagosians to avoid panic buying. He said that only essential things must be bought noting that there is no need to rush into panic buying, following the closure of gatherings in the city. Governor Sanwo-Olu gave the announcement on Friday while giving updates on the coronavirus outbreak in the state. “It is not out of place for people not to have essential things at home, there is no need for us to start panic buying,” he said. According to him, “We have not locked down the city, we have not said people cannot go to work, we have not said people cannot move from one place to the other. “We have not said that people cannot communicate, what we have said is that people should observe social distancing as much as possible and should desist from the assemblage of people that is more than a certain number that has been prescribed.” The governor also advised Lagosians to avoid overcrowded buses.

The Niger State Government has directed the closure of public and private schools as well as tertiary institutions across the state from Monday, March 23, 2020. A statement issued on Thursday by the Secretary to the State Government, Ahmed Matane, stated that all public gatherings have also been suspended by the State Government. Matane said, “The closure of the public, private schools, and tertiary institutions is for the period of 30 days, including the suspension of all public gathering. “The decision to shut down the schools for 30 days and suspend public gatherings is part of government’s deliberate efforts to contain the global spread of Coronavirus pandemic.” He called on the people of the State to always uphold the highest degree of personal hygiene, remain calm and adhere strictly to all safety measures earlier announced by the State Ministry of Health.
