Apparently still angered by the lack of meaningful initiative at reconciliation from the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, the governor of Rivers State on Sunday, met with governors backing him to consider the way forward as the 2023 presidential elections inch closer. The closed-door meeting, which was held in Rivers State Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja, was attended by state governors known to be his major backers including Sam Ortom (Benue), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia). Also in the meeting were former state governors including Donald Duke (Cross River), Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo), Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa), Ibrahim Idris (Kogi) and Jonah Jang (Plateau). The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has reacted to impeachment threats made by some legislators against President Muhammadu Buhari over insecurity security issues in the country. Men of the SouthEast security outfit, Ebubeagu, have been accused of shooting dead seven wedding guests in Awomama, Oru West Local Government Area of Imo state. According to DailyTrust, the wedding guests were returning to their village in Otulu in Oru East LGA on Sunday, July 17, when the gunmen opened fire on them, killing seven of them. The President General of Otulu community, Nnamdi Agbor, who confirmed the incident said seven persons died on the spot while others were missing. “As they were going home Ebubeagu operatives saw them in motorcycles and opened fire on them. As I speak to you, we have recovered seven dead bodies who are our people. The monarch said that five are missing, while two are critically injuried.”he said The spokesperson of the state police command, CSP Mike Abattam, has confirmed the incident and said an investigation into the incident ha commenced.

A man identified as Sunday Akingbala, who is said to be a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) supporter and member of Amotekun, has reportedly shot himself while celebrating the victory of Ademola Adeleke, governorship candidate of the party. The shooting is said to have occured in Ile Ife on Sunday. The man was taken to the Seventh Day Adventist Church hospital in Lagere, Ile Ife, but later referred to Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital. Adeleke, Osun state governor-elect, polled 403,371 votes to defeat Gboyega Oyetola, governor and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who secured 375,027 votes. The PDP candidates won 17 out of 30 LGAs in the state while the governor won 13. Both men went head-to-head at the governorship election in 2018. Adeleke was in an early lead when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the exercise “inconclusive”. Oyetola was declared winner after rerun was conducted in some polling units.
