Bandits can be won over by showing them respect and understanding, says controversial Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi. Mr Gumi, a self-appointed mediator for the brigands that have been wreaking havoc in many northern states, says his interaction with the bandits have been easy because he always “go(es) through the door.” “I go through the door, not the window. If you go through the door, you will go in and come back safely,” Mr Gumi said while fielding questions from students at a lecture in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria on Wednesday. The Nigerian military authorities have justified the killing of 20 fishermen in Borno State. A Nigerian Air Force fighter jet had on Sunday bombed Kwatar Daban Masara in Lake Chad, which straddles Nigeria and neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, killing the fishermen. Bernard Onyeuko, the acting Director of Defence Media Operations, in a statement obtained by SaharaReporters on Thursday, said those killed were terrorists as the location was a well-known Islamic State West African Province enclave and there was an existing ban on fishing activities within the area. The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Sunday said its National Executive Council would meet next week to weigh its options on whether to embark on strike or not following the failure of the Federal Government to meet some of its demands. The union’s National President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, disclosed this in an interview with The PUNCH in Abuja. Recall that ASUU had issued ultimatum to the Federal Government and accused the government of deliberately ignoring its demands. Some of ASUU’s demands include the payment of salary arrears of its members, payment of revitalisation funds of universities and the development of a new payment platform known as the UTAS platform. Dozens of military troops who were on their way to Maiduguri on Friday were ambushed by suspected members of Boko Haram linked to ISWAP group, reliable Sources told Vanguard. The incident according to Sources took place between Marte- Dikwa council areas, when the insurgents fired Rocket Launchers at military trucks which culminated into sporadic shootings, killing troops who are being conveyed from Marte Local Government Area to Maiduguri. The Nigerian President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has said that Nigeria will spare no efforts at getting rid of Boko Haram terrorists, especially in the North-East part of the West African nation. He stated this on Thursday while addressing over 80 world leaders at the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The President also lamented that Nigeria was concerned about illicit trading and movement of small arms which was increasing criminality and insurgency in the country. The governor said hundreds of millions of Naira have been spent by his administration to fix Federal Government roads without getting refunds. Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has disclosed that has been spending millions of Naira to fix portions of federal highways in the state without refund. He spoke while inspecting repair work at the Ayede-Ogbese axis of the Ilesha-Akure-Owo-Benin highway. The failed portion made motorists spend about one hour on the spot. Akeredolu said he decided to repair the failed portions to alleviate the sufferings of road users.
