A suspected thief who had broken into a mosque in Kebbi State to steal was apprehended after he became tired and fell asleep. It was gathered that the suspect identified as Hamza Usman, 31, from Maidahini village was caught in the early hours of Friday, July 30, with multiple handsets at Bayan Kara, Birnin Kebbi. According to Yakubu Ahmed Bk, the suspect who claimed that he was in the company of two others (now at large) confessed that they have been stealing phones at night in houses when owners had gone to bed. Yakubu wrote; “He went into a mosque at night after scaling walls of some houses and stealing phones and was about stealing gadgets when he suddenly fell asleep. 4 lives have been cut short following a fatal accident involving a truck and a tricycle, popularly called Keke NAPEP on Thursday, in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital. The incident happened at about 7PM within Gadumo 200 unit, along Ajaokuta road. It was learnt that the truck which was coming from Ganaja village lost control when he was trying to bypass a bad portion of the road under construction. The accident victims were trapped under the trailer for several hours calling for help as motorists and commuters made several efforts to get them out of the fully loaded truck. The Federal Government on Tuesday said traffic would be diverted on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway around Makun section for 72 hours to enable the contractor install a bridge beam. The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr Olukayode Popoola, said this during inspection of ongoing reconstruction/rehabilitation of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway project. He appealed for understanding and urged the public to disregard rumours that the road would be closed. Popoola said traffic would be diverted on a stretch of just 400 meters around the construction zone where beams were to be laid on the flyover under construction at Makun near Sagamu Interchange. He said the diversion would begin on Wednesday, July 28 and end on Friday 30 July, a total of 72 hours. Asuu strike 2021 Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a warning of an impending indefinite strike if the federal government refuses to honour the agreement which led the body to suspend their industrial action last year. ASUU Chairperson of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Dr. Ibrahim Inuwa, made this known while speaking with some journalists at the Union’s Secretariat at the weekend. He said; The protracted strike which they embarked on to press home their demands for the continuous survival of public university system in Nigeria was suspended in December after ASUU and the federal government signed a Memorandum of Understanding on various issues, providing timelines for the implementation of each of the eight items on the list. When the matter was called at about 11.10 a.m. after counsel representing parties had announced their appearances, lead counsel to the prosecution, Mohammed Abubakar, informed the court that the case was for continuation of trial and was ready for the proceedings, even though Kanu was not produced in court by the Department of State Services (DSS). 18 persons including six members of a family have perished in a ghastly car accident in Doguwa Local Government Area of Kano State. The accident involving a blue Volkswagen Sharon station wagon happened along Gadar Shiburu Riruwai-Doguwa road on Friday, July 23. The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kano State, Zubairu Mato, said the accident occurred when a bridge linking Riruwai and Doguwa broke down as a result of the heavy rainfall. The trial involving Nigerian activist, Omoyele Sowore, and Olawale Bakare has suffered a setback at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The presiding Judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, has been transferred to Calabar and has informed the Chief Justice, Justice Tsoho, that although she would continue with other cases, she would no longer preside over Sowore’s case. This implies that the case marked, FHC/ABJ/CR/235/19 , will have to start afresh for the second time. This is just as two other judges have refused to take up Sowore’s case due to its ‘sensitive nature.’ The Department of State Services had arraigned Sowore and Bakare before Justice Ojukwu for treasonable felony for organising the ‘Revolution Now’ protest on August 5, 2019, which the government saw as an attempt to disrupt peace in the country. Several persons including 6 policemen were killed when unknown gunmen attacked a Police checkpoint in Amodu, Obeagu-Amechi in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu state. Suspected Fulani herdsmen have killed a 200 level student of the Benue State University, Makurdi, Japhet Toryila and three other persons. It was gathered that the Public Administration student was killed by the assailants in his farm at Tom-ayin in Guma Local Government Area of Benue state, on Sunday afternoon, July 18. It was further learnt that Japhet concluded his first semester exams last week and proceeded home to farm. A family source said that the deceased was an orphan who farm to pay his school fees.
